Forest project

After seeing fabric leaves in a California gallery I knew I would have to try too. My interpretation is nothing like what I saw, other than a leaf form. I started with a base of cotton hand dyed fabric, Misty Fuse, Shibori waste, Angelina and topped it with hand dyed Organza. I fused the organza down in pleats, thinking it would add texture and the idea of ribs in the leaves.

I fused this to timtex then fused cotton to the back. Traced out my leaf pattern and cut them out. I could not bear to have so much scrap so I packed the leaves tightly and let the ribs run what ever way they fell! Then sewed around them and put wire down the center encased in zig-zag. The first one my hubby said the organza is too flat...so as I sewed around I bunched the organza ribs...Much better.

This is a plant that grows around our stump and is the inspiration for this set of leaves. Eventually there will be a leaf wall installation. Stay tuned!!!
